As you approach Gibraltar it is quite a strange sight. In front of you stands a giant rock, for which Gibraltar is famous. The actual location of Gibraltar is one of strategic importance and it is the only route into to Europe via sea from the Atlantic Ocean. This made it an important stronghold during the world wars and up until recently was an RAF airbase. Although the rock is very imposing, even from a distance, the actual size of Gibraltar is quite small, measuring less that 6 km2.

There is much debate over the future sovereignty of the Rock but at the moment it is a British colony, which is self governed. The British government is responsible for the Rocks defense and stability but the everyday affairs are handled by its own Chief Minister and government assembly. Although Gibraltar is a member of the EU it remains outside of the "Custom Union". This means that it still offers duty free products to travellers from within other EU states. Something that is not possible from other EU member states.

There is an International airport at Gibraltar which has gradually increased its number of flights and even has the low cost airline Monarch flying people to and from Gibraltar. There is still much debate over the Rock and its future, but it is widely believed that Spain and Britain will one day have dual ownership of the airport.

The history of Gibraltar is very much of a naval perspective but another thing people know the rock of Gibraltar for are the apes that are allowed to run free on the heights of the rock. A visit to Gibraltar is not complete without a trip up on the cable car to visit the apes and take in the spectacular view.

Gibraltar is located in a perfect position for visiting many parts of southern Spain. It is ideal for access to the entire Costa del Sol as well as the Costa de la Luz. Portugal is a few hours drive and Africa is just across the Straits. Due to this, Gibraltar is becoming a sought after area to purchase property.
