Historic three party agreement on Gibraltar Airport

Subsequent to years of negotiations and backtracking by both countries, and the occasional fall-out, a historical agreement has been reached between Spain and the UK over the airport at Gibraltar. While this agreement does not in any way affect the sovereignty of Gibraltar it is an important development for the property investment market in southern Spain, especially the nearby towns of La Linea, Alcaidesa, San Roque, Sotogrande and Jimena de la Frontera.

With tourism figures at a record high this year it is widely believed that the property investment market will take a huge boost, especially with what is now referred to as the jet-to-let property investment market. This market is made up of mainly younger first time buyers that cannot afford to get on the UK property ladder and have a much greater chance of buying affordable property in Spain that will be sure to increase in value at the same rate, if not higher than that of the UK

The new deal for Gibraltar Airport essentially means that the historical measures that have been in place for many years will finally be relaxed. This will include a relaxation of things like the restrictions on flights to and from Gibraltar and even the roaming of mobile phone signals in Gibraltar. It is anticipated that there will be a large upturn in business on the island and increased trade with Spain itself.

The agreement was signed in the Andalucian city of Cordoba by the Spanish foreign minister Migual Angel Moratinos and the UK minister for Europe, Geoff Hoon.
